Healthy Kids Dental Begins Oct. 1st

By | For Kids, Health & Wellness

Beginning October 1, 2013, Healthy Kids Dental will be available for the first time in Ottawa County.  Both Smile Grand Haven and Little Smiles will be participating in the program.

Healthy Kids Dental is a no-cost dental program offered by the Michigan Department of Community Health and administered by Delta Dental.  The program is available to children under age 19 and pregnant women.  Those who are already enrolled in Medicaid will automatically be enrolled in Healthy Kids.  Others can apply online or by visiting their local health department.

Why is Smile Grand Haven participating?

  • Tooth decay is the #1 chronic childhood illness
  • Tooth decay is 5 times more common than asthma, 4 times more likely than childhood obesity and 20 times more likely than diabetes
  • Pain and infection caused by tooth decay can lead to malnourishment, bacterial infections, and problems speaking and learning
  • In the US alone, more than 51 million hours school hours and 164 million work hours are lost each year due to dental disease

Dr. Riopelle was one of the first Healthy Kids providers in the State of Michigan, when the program was first introduced in Gratiot County in 2000.  He witnessed firsthand the impact it made to the community, and he and the Smile Team and looking forward to strengthening Ottawa County in the same way.

February is Children’s Dental Health Month

By | Community Events, For Kids, Fun Stuff, Health & Wellness

Smile Grand Haven and Little Smiles celebrate Children’s National Dental Health Month by educating children about the benefits of good oral health.

It’s 600 children and 8 different schools in 5 days in 2013.  But this is not your regular dentist career day kinda visit!

Whether we are visiting a classroom or the children take a field trip to Little Smiles, we have a great time talking about wiggly teeth, practicing our brushing with Harry the Horse, performing science experiments with eggs, apples and Oreos and passing out flashing toothbrushes.  We laugh a ton and learn a bunch.

We’ve eatin’ our Wheaties, backed our bags and are ready to go!
